The Natural Way
This small abstract is quite important to me as I seem to have lost my confidence in my abstract works even though I have exhibited numerous abstracts in commercial galleries.
I guess this can be common for abstract artists especially those of us who live in small cities. I have had to endure comments from "What is THAT?" to "Did your grandkids get in to your art supplies?" and many more. Rude comments shouldn't bother me but sometimes they do. I tend to move back into a more realistic method of self expression when my confidence is shaken. Realistic work either looks like what it is supposed to represent or it doesn't. Few casual observers notice a focal point, whether you have enough or too much information, whether the colours enhance the composition, whether the texture and brushwork are compatible with the work and whether it is a good composition. These are some of the many elements that determine whether an abstract is successful or not.
I put this finished work away for a couple of weeks before I decided to show it to anyone. It is a work I am very proud of and get ready to see more abstract work in the future. I am back and painting in my natural way!
