When I can no longer stand winter, I paint spring. I am lucky in that I am actually in the scene as I paint. On the way home, after finishing this one, I was taken aback when I saw a snowbank. The illusion of spring does not last long here in Canada.
This painting was inspired by a mountain trail I was walking on while taking a few days off late last spring. I have made a few adjustments to the actual scene as I usually do. Getting the feeling and the composition right are the important things to me in a painting. I do not go after a perfect likeness but I hope I can convey the sense of wonder and deep connection I feel when I am on a hike.
Higher ground is on gallery canvas. The sides are painted black and all hanging hardware has been attached to hang without a frame. The purchaser could add a frame at a later date but this painting seems complete the way it is.
